quality of life of the people we support.
This will be done by:
Providing enhancement and educational training to direct support
professionals on person centered thinking,
Providing a communication base to direct support professionals for sharing
ideas,information and experiences,
Gathering information on direct support issues and then sharing them in
order to promote person centered change, and
Becoming an advocate for direct support in the state of Missouri.
Amended 7/18/01
Background
Direct Support Professionals of Missouri (DSPM) began in 1997 as a way to
get direct staff together, communicate ideas, and provide information to a
typically ill-informed section of human resources. With the help of a grant
from AAMR, the group grew, holding several conferences, bringing together
direct support providers from across the Northwest Missouri area and
sponsoring presenters including internationally known writer/speaker, Dave
Hingsburger. Our "state core group" (those involved in the overall direction
of the organization) has presented at the annual Missouri AAMR conference
1998-2002, the annual MACDDS conference from 1998-2000 and the Region V AAMR
conference in 1999. DSPM has held more conferences in the Northwest Missouri
area, focusing on a variety of topics, including, stress and burn-out, team
building and abuse and neglect.
DSPM has placed a web site on the Internet (http://www.dspm.com), supplied by the Missouri
Department of Mental Health. In addition, the organization has become an
affiliate of the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (NADSP)
in the state of Missouri. Recently, DSPM participated with NADSP in forming
a nation-wide code of ethics for direct support. In the future, DSPM hopes
to expand across Missouri, providing an advocating voice for direct support
in the state.
