Making a World of Difference in Peoples Lives: National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals

Frontline Initiative is the official publication of The National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP). It is written and designed to be used by the direct support professional (DSP) and frontline supervisors (FLS) in their work supporting individuals with disabilities.

Do you feel passionate about a particular topic or have an idea that would be of interest to other DSPs? Then perhaps you would like to share your stories or ideas for an article for an upcoming issue of Frontline Initiative.

Frontline Initiative is pleased to invite submissions of stories and articles for possible publication from direct support professionals (DSPs), frontline supervisors (FLS), agency personnel, professional in the field, individuals with disabilities, parents and family members, advocates or other people who would like to share their successes with other DSPs who support individuals with disabilities. Article or story formats may include "how-to's," ready-to-use job aids for supporting individuals with disabilities, quality assurance ideas, updates on trends, resource (books, videos, websites, etc.) reviews, and generally viewpoints of interested related to direct support professionals and frontline supervisors.

Suggested Topic ideas:


  • Celebrating Quiet Heroes - creating better lives by supporting individuals with disabilities?
  • Abuse prevention - its importance when working with individuals with disabilities?
  • Stories about Direct Support Professionals on the job
  • Quality Assurance - what is it and how do you do it?
  • It's my Life! Person Centered Champions - Real live stories about embracing the person centered philosophy and stories about how it is being done across the country.
  • Supporting People with Mental Health needs and Preventing Unnecessary Hospitalization - stories about developing 24-hour back up or crisis intervention teams, information on how to train DSPs to respond and support individuals with mental health diagnosis proactively avoiding crisis or hospitalizations, etc.
  • Recruitment and Retention of High Quality Professionals - Direct Support Professionals and Frontline Supervisors - How do you find them? How do you keep them?
  • Creating and Supporting Teamwork - How working together supports a better quality of life for everyone on the team.


Submission Policy

Length: Please submit stories that are an average length of up to 500 words or less. Any submissions longer than 500 words may be shorted by editorial staff or divided into parts for serial publications.

Format: Place the title on a separate line at the top of the first page bold type face. The title should be followed by the author's name and contact information as it is intended to be published. If there is more than one author, list the names on separate lines in the order they are to appear. Be sure to include page numbers on each page of documents you submit.

Citations: Authors are responsible for the accuracy of all submitted materials including references, citations, quotations, and spelling. All materials other than specific quotations and citations must be the author's own work. If there is significant use of copyrighted materials in the article, the author is responsible for securing permission to use the material and passing this permission along with actual documentation to editorial staff.

Editing: FI will apply its own style guidelines to assure consistency using person centered language in the publication and reserves the right to edit for clarity, length and content without significantly changing the meaning of the story. Authors are encouraged to include related readings, resources or references. These can include;
  • A short list of publications (two to three entries) that may help readers learn more about the content of your story
  • Specific, easy-to-find materials.
  • Annotated entries which explain to readers why the resource is valuable.

    If you have a story but feel shy about putting it into words we can help.
    • We are willing to interview people and help you to write your story.
    • We have a great team of editors who can also help with spelling and grammar.
