Direct Support Professional- Specialist (DSP-S)

There are four specialist areas in which you can seek credentialing. The four specialist certificates include: Positive Behavioral Support, Health Support, Inclusion and Supervision & Mentoring. The specialist certificate is designed to recognize DSPs who have obtained specialized training and have demonstrated competence in providing specialized support to individuals with disabilities in community human services. You must apply for each specialist credential separately.

Requirements for specialized certification:
  1. Are a DSP-Certified;
  2. Complete approved continuing education in the area of specialization (40 hours);
  3. Complete a portfolio work sample that demonstrates competence in specialization area;
  4. Prove one year continuous work with an individual who requires specialized support in the area of specialization for which you are applying;
  5. Provide a letter from your employer in support of competence and professional integrity in the area of specialization in which you are applying for certification.
Fee for DSP-S: $100.00

Re-Certification for the DSP-S is required
In order to maintain a certified DSP-S status you must be re-certified every two years (for each specialty area). The re-certification process requires that you:
  1. meet re-certification requirements for DSP-Certified;
  2. provide proof of completion of 5 hours of continuing education in the area of specialization;
  3. re-affirm your commitment to the NADSP Code of Ethics.
Fee for DSP-C Re-certification: $10
