Direct Support Professional- Certified (DSP-C)

This credential recognizes DSPs that demonstrate competence (across 15 professional skill areas). This credential sets this group of DSPs apart from others because DSP-C's demonstrate mastery of skills that are acquired through education/training, on the job experience and demonstration of professional skills.

Requirements for certifications:
  1. Are a DSP-Registered;
  2. Prove that you have completed an approved educational or training program (200 instructional hours and 3000 on the job hours);
  3. Prove that you have two years continuous work with a community human service employer (an individual with a disability or a provider organization);
  4. Submit a professional resume;
  5. Update and/or modify your letter of professional commitment;
  6. Provide a letter of support/recommendation from a person you support or in some situations their family member or legal representative;
  7. Develop and submit a portfolio with work samples that demonstrate competence and skill in 8 of the 15 skill areas;
  8. Sign a commitment to adhere to the NADSP Code of Ethics.
Fee for DSP-C: $150.00

Re-Certification for the DSP-C is required
In order to maintain a certified DSP status you must be re-certified every two years. The re-certification process requires you to:
  1. Prove that you have completed of 20 hours of continuing education in the field of direct support in community human services for people with disabilities;
  2. Re-affirm your commitment to the NADSP Code of Ethics.
Fee for DSP-C Re-certification: $50
