DSP-Certified Information
This credential recognizes DSPs that demonstrate competence (across 15 professional skill areas). This credential sets this group of DSPs apart from others because DSP-C's demonstrate mastery of skills that are acquired through education/training, on the job experience and demonstration of professional skills.Required elements:
- Must be a DSP-Registered;
- Proof of completion of an approved educational/training program (200 related instruction hours and 3000 on the job hours (see page 13 for details about these requirements);
- Proof of two years continuous work with an employer (an individual who uses community human services and self-directs or a provider organization);
- Submission of a professional resume;
- Updated and/or modified letter of professional commitment;
- Letter of support/recommendation from a person to whom the DSP provides service or in some situations their family member or legal representative;
- Portfolio work samples that demonstrate competence in 8/15 areas of the approved Direct Support Professional job analysis; and
- Signed commitment to adhere to the NADSP Code of Ethics.
Recognized award:
- Officially embossed certificate that identifies them personally as a DSP- Certified;
- Lapel pin that says "Direct Support Professional - Certified,";
- Personalized letter from NADSP congratulating them on their achievement.
What happens after I apply?
Your DSP-Certified application packet will be reviewed by the NADSP within 2-4 weeks of receipt. If it meets the criteria for credentialing you will receive your DSP-Certified recognition package. The package includes: an embossed certificate that personally identifies you as DSP-Certified; a lapel pin that reinforces the achievement of the Direct Support Professional-Certified credential; and a personal letter from NADSP congratulating you on your achievement
Re-certification: In order to maintain DSP-Certified status the DSP must be re-certified every two years. The re-certification process requires:
- Proof of completion of 20 hours of continuing education in the field of direct support in community human services;
- Re-affirmation of commitment to the NADSP Code of Ethics.
